Cultural Centre of the Valmiera Castle and the new exposition “de Woldemer”
Description
In the archive of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck, there is a document from 1381. It’s sealed with a yellow wax seal with Valmiera’s oldest coat of arms, including words – de Woldemer – from Valmiera.
The new exposition of the Valmiera Museum “de Woldemer” invites you: “Unlock the history of Valmiera!” The exhibition harmoniously integrates into the new modern urban structure and the oldest wooden building in Valmiera, also known as Old Pharmacy. It was built around 1735. It is the oldest known wooden residential building in the cities of Latvia, built in a specific construction technique – a log building in a cross-shaped frame with log beams and profiled ends of beams protruding under the rafters.
The environment of the old town of Valmiera has also come to life thanks to the restoration works in the Valmiera castle, improved castle territory, and the exposition of the outdoor space.
Improvements made within the project
The northern defensive wall of the Valmiera castle and the exposed walls of the north-western cellars have been preserved. A new glass building organically matches the restored oldest wooden architecture. An exposition of history from the 13th to 18th century tells about Valmiera castle, the Hanse, the townspeople’s worldviews, and everyday life. Several new museum services have been created.
The total financing of the project Culture, History, Architecture in Gauja and Time Circles is EUR 2,042,965.95, of which EUR 1,032,900 is ERDF co-funding. As part of the project Development of the Historical Centre of Valmiera, the total funding for the creation of the Cultural Centre of the Valmiera Castle is EUR 3,122,006.90, of which 1,168,047.65 EUR is ERDF co-funding.

Getting there
The Valmiera Museum is a 15-minute walk from the bus station and a 30-
minute walk from the railway station. We invite you to park a car in the
parking lot next to the Valmiera Culture Centre (Valmieras Kultūras
centrs, Rīgas iela 10).
